For the ERA Portal Slovakia, we developed a comprehensive website that serves as a central information hub for research, development, and innovation in Slovakia and the European Research Area. The portal connects researchers, entrepreneurs, and the professional community with current challenges, grant programs, legislation, and events in the field of science. Our work on the project encompassed everything from designing the information architecture to developing custom functionalities and completing the data migration from the outdated platform.

The goal was to transform a vast database of information into a clear and fast tool that saves users time. The portal is designed so that navigating through research programs and grant opportunities is easy even for first-time visitors. A clear structure, efficient search capabilities, and a logical hierarchy of content underpin the entire solution.
(PROBLÉM)
The older website suffered from a convoluted structure and outdated technical solutions, making content management and visitor navigation difficult. Migrating data from the original platform posed risks of losing historical articles, having broken links, and interrupting portal availability. Additionally, it was essential to design an administrative environment in which the editorial team could effectively manage a large volume of regularly updated content.

With a portal that contains such a vast amount of content, it was crucial to create a system where users would not get lost. We designed an intuitive categorization and navigation system that allows users to quickly find specific calls, programs, or events without unnecessary clicks. In addition to the structure, we developed custom functionalities, including automated newsletter generation, links to partner portals, and a registration system for experts. The project also included complete content migration from the older platform, during which we preserved all historical articles, databases of calls, and existing links without any disruption to the portal's functionality.

Users of the ERA Portal need to be continuously informed about new calls, events, and changes in legislation. Therefore, we implemented an automated newsletter, a challenge filtering system by area and deadline, registration for events, and expert registration. Each of these functionalities was custom-developed to ensure users receive relevant information at the right time and in the right place.

The biggest challenge was to process a huge volume of content while keeping the website fast, clear, and easily manageable. The ERA Portal covers legislation, calls, events, programs, and news across the entire research sector. Each category has different display and filtering requirements. Finding a unified system that works for all types of content while remaining comprehensible to users required thorough analysis and several design iterations.
(USER CENTRIC)
The entire portal is designed from the perspective of a person seeking specific answers. A researcher needs to quickly find the latest call. An entrepreneur wants to know what grant programs are available. A journalist is searching for the latest news in the field of science. Each of these users has a clear path to the information they need within the portal, without unnecessary steps and without needing to understand the entire structure of the website.
